Floyd &#8211; Davis<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1- Mayo Surname<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the House of Names, Mayo is a name of ancient Norman origin.\u00a0 It arrived in England with the Norman Conquest of 1066.\u00a0 The Mayo family originally settled in Norfolk, England.\u00a0 Their name, however, derives from the family&#8217;s place of residence prior to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, Mayeux, Normandy (France).<\/p>\n<p>The <em><strong>Normans<\/strong> were<\/em> descendants of Vikings, who settled in the area of northwest France in the early 10th century AD and crossed the English Channel in 1066.<\/p>\n<p>Mayo may be a variation of Mayhew or Mayow.<\/p>\n<p>There are two distinct lines of Mayo&#8217;s in the U.S. &#8211; both lines descend from England, but are not likely to be of direct relation.\u00a0 The first Mayo line looks to have come to the states in the early 1600&#8217;s (our line) from Wiltshire (ENG), while the second Mayo line (related to the descendents of the Mayo clinic) came to the states in 1845 from Manchester (ENG).\u00a0 Other researchers of both Mayo lines surmise that long ago in the 1500&#8217;s (or earlier) these families had closer familial ties, but no documentation has yet been located.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>2 &#8211; Mayo Family Lineage<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Current research shows predominant lineage to England &amp; Scotland.\u00a0 This includes the strong probability that part of the line tracks back to Scottish royalty in the 1500&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Also: Two located ancestors trace their roots to Ireland.\u00a0 These ancestors immigrated to America in the 1700&#8217;s from Cork, IRE with the surnames of Stroud &amp; Pickett.\u00a0 Although this information has been confirmed by other researchers, we have yet to personally review the documentation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>3 &#8211; Civil War<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>John Joseph R Mayo (1837-1907) served in the Georgia 30th Infantry, Company A\/I during the Civil War.\u00a0 Company A later became Company I.\u00a0 John would later become a Sgt &amp; a prisoner of war.<\/p>\n<p><em>See Mayo &#8216;Civil War&#8217; posts for more of his story.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">4 &#8211; Revolutionary War<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jeremiah Lumsden (1760-1837) served as a private in the Revolutionary War.\u00a0 The Lumsden surname tracks back to Scottish royalty in the 1500&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>John Lumsden (1738-1788) who was the father of Jeremiah Lumsden, also served in the Revolutionary War.<\/p>\n<p>This information is almost certainly correct, however, we are pending final documentation on one relationship before changing the status to &#8220;Confirmed&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>5 &#8211; Early Colonists<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Captain John Thomas Clay (1587-1655) came to Jamestown, VA in 1613 from Monmouth, Wales to protect America&#8217;s first permanent English Colonists.\u00a0 He was a &#8216;British Genadier&#8217; or hired soldier in the King&#8217;s army and made passage to the New World on the ship &#8216;Treasurer&#8217;.\u00a0 As a historical reference: Jamestown was first established in 1607, while the Mayflower didn&#8217;t arrive until 1620.<\/p>\n<p>This information is considered &#8220;Highly Probable&#8221;
